Just a rail ’n a maze: Rescue Mission & Maze Hunter 3-D | Segaiden 057
We're back to Master System for a while, and folks, this was a rough reentry. I learned a lot about Master System hardware while trying to acquire literally ANY usable Rescue Mission footage at all-turns out this game is bizarrely hard to get working since it requires use of the Light Phaser but struggles to read the peripheral via my television on both real hardware and MiSTer. Special thanks to Mr. Porkchop of misteraddons.com for going to extra mile with me to figure out how to get the thing working (it gave his setup fits, too).
Was it worth the trouble? Well, not really. Rescue Mission is charming and has some good ideas, but it is possibly the most frantic and unfairly-stacked-against-the-player light gun game this side of Revolution X. Eventually, Sega would discover the concept of a "continue feature," but that day is not today.
Happily, Maze Hunter 3-D holds up a lot better! It's a different sort of 3D game, one that goes for the diorama effect rather than an immersive first-person viewpoint, and despite feeling a little underbaked it plays well. It almost comes off as a preview of future Sega dungeon/maze games like Dragon Crystal... almost. If nothing else, Sega and M2 liked it enough to enshrine it on 3DS, something that turns out to be the case for annoyingly few 8-bit 3D games.

Sega Master System: Japan version BIOS demo [4K]
Переглядів 6 тис.День тому
This is 4K RGB capture of what you get when you boot up a Japanese Sega Master System without a game inserted: Namely, an 8-bit FM rendition of the Space Harrier theme with some dancing stars as you skin an infinite checkerboard. No snails for Japan... only jams. This BIOS demo is only present in the Japanese Master System, not the U.S. or European consoles, and not the Japanese Mark III. Recor...
Nintendo at the top of its game: Peak NES | NES Works 1989
Переглядів 23 тис.День тому
It's August 1989 and the NES is on top of the world (or at least unstoppable in the U.S., anyway). This is the ideal console. You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like. Things are about to change radically here in the NES Works chronology, though. I mean, the NES itself has another five years of life left in it-that's not about to change. But the NES has entirely dominat...

1989 has been a year of impressive maturation for the NES platform, but Baseball Stars really shows how far along the console-and console gaming as a whole-have come since the early days. Aw, just kidding with that title. Super Mario Land is great. I mean, yes, it is the smallest, slightest, simplest, and easiest of all the first-party Mario platform games. My dad was obsessed with trying to beat this game. I thought it was a fever dream because i could never remember the name and it didn't end up on anyone's best of lists. He never beat it. There were parts of a dungeon he couldn't figure out how to get to.

They managed to get SimCity 2000 working on the SNES, which is technically impressive, bur the control scheme isn't very good, but the worst thing is the music. it's as bad as the music in this SimCity is good.

Those three "lives" in Rescue Mission feel like they could almost be the main characters in some kind of gag manga or cartoon of the era- the no-nonsense all-rounder, the eager newbie and the laidback slacker are all archetypes with proven staying power... but I'm not sure a cartoon about medics being under constant fire in a war-zone would make for very good jokes, even in Reagan's toyetic 80's. I also want to defend Nintendo out of misplaced old factional loyalty but nah you are right, ROB really was a big gimmick and Smash Bros has made better use of the character than any game from this era ever did.

Shout out for mentioning the Phantasy Star Collection on GBA. Yeah it a technical mess (the audio being the big one, did hear issues with save files as well) but in 2002 it was the only reasonable way to play the first Phantasy Star without tracking down a Master System. Still have my copy and if anything the insert, which has a list of all in game equipment and it's uses/stats, is something I still use to this day whenever the urge to revisit the series strikes.

Possibly an unpopular opinion but I enjoy Rad Racer(NES) much more than Out Run(SMS). This is definitely skewed by nostalgia but ive always liked the music and gameplay more.

Not certain exactly what you mean by "posthumous" physical release (I assume you just mean after the end of the Master System's life span), but the Master System versions of Fantasy Zone (a secret inclusion accessible if you tap the bottom left corner in the Extras menu) and Fantasy Zone II are both also on that same Sega 3D Classics Collection cart on 3DS. So wouldn't those also count as the 4th and 5th Master System games with a physical release in the US?

Why was the GBA version of Phantasy Star "miserable?" I've only played that version and I remember enjoying it a surprising amount, considering I played it for the first time in 2007. I know it has that save glitch where your file can be corrupted if you save at the end of a BGM loop or whatever but what else was wrong with it?

I am glad to hear this take on Maze Hunter 3-D as I love this game. It feels like everything a good tech demo turned game should be. The depth of perspective is really impressive even today. Tip: if you have a Jeremy+ size head and can't wear the original SMS 3D glasses I recommend picking up a pair of vintage ASUS VR-100G glasses. They are larger and work great, you will still need the dongle to plug them into on a US SMS but otherwise are ready to use.

Great video. I'm curious, how did you manage to blot out the alternate frames for Maze Hunter 3-D? Seems like it'd either be an issue that's very simple to fix or an absolute headache, with no in between.

    • @JeremyParish
      @JeremyParish 3 дні тому

Adobe Premiere lets you set frame rates, so all you have to do is reduce a clip to 30fps to cut alternating frames. It's not quite perfect since the actual capture rate is 59.97 fps and Premiere won't go to precisely half that, but it does the trick well enough for my needs.

Always enjoy excursions through the lesser known territory that is the 8-bit Sega catalogue. I feel like the name didn't do this one many favours, whenever I've seen it in print I never got the impression of an action focused title along the lines of a Dungeon Explorer. Hopefully some day the economics of manufacturing such a thing allow Sega get around to a Master System mini with functional peripherals, even if they'd have to be mechanically different.

Sega is infamous for forgetting games in their back catalogue. I’m surprised of the ones that I unlocked in classic Genesis Collections on the PS2 and PSP. Space Fury. Congo Bongo. Zaxxon. It seems like these days, if it’s not Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega won’t touch it. I’m glad they licensed out their other franchises to other developers and publishers, however.
